Part Time Reference & Adult Services Librarian

The right candidate would join a team of library professionals at the Red Bank Public Library providing exemplary service to the community of Red Bank. Reference services, computer training, web site and social media initiatives would be in the purview of this job. Local History work is a possibility. Candidates would be required to work about 12 hours every week. The schedule may include an evening and every Saturday.

Qualifications

A MLIS degree along with a NJ Professional Librarian Certificate is preferred, but candidates currently enrolled in a Master’s program leading to a MLIS degree will also be considered. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Experience with archives and preservation highly desirable. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher, new technologies and social media in libraries is required. Must be able to shelve books and lift up to 30 pounds. A team player, a sense of humor and an ability to embrace new challenges would set this candidate apart. This position will provide opportunities to experience many areas within the library and will be an excellent position to provide entry level librarian experience.

Part-time library assistant

Primary Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Handle all aspects of circulation including check in/out library materials on automated circulation system. Renew materials in person and over the phone.
  • Issue library cards to patrons and provide basic information regarding the library’s policies and procedures, as well as array of services.
  • Assist with programming, displays, the creation and production of flyers and other publicity materials using software tools such as Microsoft Publisher and Canva.
  • Clear patron fines/fees, place holds and maintain patron files and records.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues, referring patrons to supervisor or other departments when necessary.
  • Assist with overdue and other notifications to borrowers.
  • Understand how to best use the online catalogue and internet.
  • Provide simple reference information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Abilities:
  • Must possess expertise in Microsoft Office and social media platforms and proficiency with digital apps.
  • Maintain effective working relationship with both the public and colleagues.
  • Perform basic math functions, including work with money to give change.
  • Learn the library’s automated circulation system, policies, and procedures.
  • Bend, reach and lift up to 40 lbs. to perform the physical tasks at the Circulation Desk, including but not limited to emptying bins, packaging books, handling donations.
  • Ability to push a cart full of library materials.
  • Catalog materials such as magazines and non-print items.
  • Work a flexible schedule. Some Saturdays and evenings a must.
  • Adapt to changing computer technology.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  Proficiency in Spanish preferred.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required.  College preferred. 
  • Computer expertise with email, search engines, basic Windows and Microsoft functions, as well as social media.
  • Library background or related customer service preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.
  • Familiarity with the SirsiDynix library automated circulation system preferred, but training will be provided.
  • General knowledge of library policies, procedures and practices a plus.
